The Field Operations Division is the public face of Boston EMS. Mayor Menino's EMS enhancement program, which he launched in 1994, has increased (by 38%) the number of EMTs and paramedics on the streets of Boston to 285.

EMS In ActionIn calendar year 2001, Boston EMS had more than 101,000 emergency incidents. Whether we are responding to a medical emergency or providing EMTs to staff local high school football games, the men and women of Boston EMS display a professionalism and commitment that is a familiar and welcome presence in Boston's neighborhoods.

But while Boston EMS has a highly-regarded national reputation for its delivery of care in emergency situations, our extensive work to prevent the very emergencies we are trained to handle is perhaps less well known. EMTs and paramedics spent thousands of hours last year spreading the word in Boston's neighborhoods about healthy living and injury prevention. We participated in countless health fairs, taught CPR classes, conducted blood pressure screenings, and talked to teenagers about how to prevent violence.
